Cast Iron Bell Stolen from PdC Wyalusing Academy Building

The bell, made in 1873, was the original bell at St. Mary’s and has historical significance to the area.

A 141 year old iron bell was stolen from the entrance to the former Wyalusing Academy building in Prairie du Chien.

Prairie du Chien Police received a report that the bell was missing on Thursday. It may have been gone for a while and nobody noticed. Crawford County Crime Stoppers said in a release that the theft could have occured sometime between between the beginning of the month and January 16th. Also stolen was the rod iron holder.

Police say it would have taken at least a couple people and a vehicle to move the over 200 pound bell.

The recent closing of Wyalusing Academy likely made the theft of the bell easier. Police speculate that the bell could have been removed during the day and a witness might not have even realized they were observing a theft.

The bell was the original cast iron bell from St. Mary’s. It was cast by L.G. Stuckslede Brothers in St. Louis in 1873. The bell has historical value to the area and the reward could be substatial, according to Crawford County Crime Stoppers.
