Excessive Heat and Cooling Centers

* WHAT…Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 111 expected.
* WHERE…In Iowa, Winneshiek, Allamakee, Fayette and Clayton Counties. In Wisconsin, Crawford, Richland and Grant Counties.
* WHEN…From 11 AM this morning to 8 PM CDT Thursday.
* IMPACTS…Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
* AFFECTED AREAS: WINNESHIEK … ALLAMAKEE … FAYETTE … CLAYTON … CRAWFORD … RICHLAND … GRANT
Instructions:
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
Crawford County Emergency Management and Crawford County Public Health Department are working together to assist citizens of Crawford County if they need a cooling center. If the public needs a cooling center, they may contact the Crawford County Public Health office at 608-326-0229 if it is between the hours of 8AM and 4PM. Outside of that time frame, the public may contact the Crawford County Communications Center at 608-326-8414, and they will notify Emergency Management to assist with the opening of a cooling centers.
