On July 4, 2022, at approximately 1:22 P.M. the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen 5×8 utility trailer from a residence on State Highway 27 located in Prairie du Chien Township. The reporting party stated a male subject knocked on the door to the residence during a heavy rainstorm moving through the area at the time. The male party then got into a dark gray Dodge pickup truck, backed up to the utility trailer parked next to a barn, hooked the trailer up to the truck, and took off out the driveway.
At around 4:10 P.M. a Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputy located the suspected Dodge pickup truck with the stolen trailer in tow north bound on STH 27 in the Mt. Sterling area. An attempt to stop the vehicle caused the Truck to accelerate and not stop, a pursuit ensued. The pursuit would later be terminated by law enforcement due to safety concerns.
Short time after the pursuit was terminated. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputy was flagged down by a resident on County Road C., because the pickup truck and trailer entered their driveway and crashed at the back end of their property.
Josh R. Malott age 33, of Madison and Jacob R. Hommen age 31, of Madison would be taken into custody from this incident.
Further investigation found the involved 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck was stolen from the Madison area in the early morning hours of July 3, 2022. Other stolen items were recovered from inside the vehicle along with the attached stolen utility trailer.
Assisting the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office on scene was the Prairie du Chien Police Department K9 Unit, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Ocooch MTN Rescue squad, Ferryville 1st Responders, and Milo’s Towing.
This case remains under investigation and anyone with information regarding this Dodge pickup truck and a male subject attempting to sell items with this pickup truck, is asked to contact the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
