One Vehicle Rollover with Injuries
On July 6, 2024 at about 12:22 AM the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call in regard to a crash on Hwy 18 near Brown School Rd, east of Fennimore, WI. The caller originally reported they thought it was a vehicle versus a deer and the driver of the vehicle was injured .Upon arriving at the scene, the investigating deputy found a very different scene.
The investigating deputy learned that Walter Leffler, 49, of rural Fennimore, was traveling west on Hwy 18, about ¼ mile east of Brown School Rd, driving a 2007 Saturn Vue registered to his wife. Leffler’s vehicle left the road to the north side of the highway, drove along the shoulder for some distance before crossing back on to the road, crossing the centerline and eventually the fog line on the south side of the road. The vehicle then left the road, struck a culvert at a field entrance on the south side of the highway, crossing that driveway, and striking an embankment. The vehicle then continued, back toward the highway, finally coming to rest, almost perpendicular to the highway, just past the fog line on the south side of the road.
At some point during the event, Leffler was ejected from the vehicle and he appeared to have landed about 20 feet from where the car came to rest. He then managed to crawl around his car to remove himself from the road surface. Leffler was found sitting next to the passenger side of this vehicle, in the ditch. He had apparent, serious injuries to his lower extremities. Leffler was transported to Grant Regional Health Center for treatment of his injuries. He was later transported by medical helicopter for advanced care at a larger hospital.
During the course of the investigation, the deputy determined that Leffler had been drinking alcohol and a legal blood draw was conducted after a search warrant was obtained.
The crash is still under investigation. Citations regarding the crash will be issued as the crash investigation progresses.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fennimore Fire Department, Fennimore EMS, the Fennimore Police Department, and Doan’s Towing of Fennimore.
