On Friday, January 5, 2024, at approximately 4:08 am, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle semi crash on Hwy 151 Northbound at the McAdam Rd overpass, with a secondary semi-crash occurring moments later. Jason Beckman, age 49, from Lake View, IA, was traveling northbound on Hwy 151 in his 2014 Peterbilt semi-tractor and trailer when he left the roadway on the road’s left side (west side). Beckman struck a guard rail and continued traveling northbound, destroying approximately 150 yards of metal guardrail and wooden posts. The semi struck the concrete guardrail barrier on the 151 bridge over McAdam Rd. At that time, the tractor and trailer split. The trailer plummeted to the creek bed and roadway below, striking and destroying a guard rail along McAdam Rd. The trailer also struck one of the concrete pylons for the Hwy 151 bridge, then came to rest across McAdam Rd. The trailer was loaded with pork belly and scattered throughout McAdam Rd and all other areas under the 151 bridge. At the same time the trailer fell to the roadway below, the tractor rolled on its passenger side and continued sliding northbound on Hwy 151 across the bridge. The tractor came to rest, teetering over the edge of the bridge’s concrete guardrail barrier on the north end. The engine separated from the tractor’s cab and came to rest on the centerline of Hwy 151, approximately 30 yards north of the bridge where the tractor came to rest. Moments later, James Gordon, age 56, from Waverly, IA, was traveling northbound in his 2020 Kenworth pulling a fully loaded hopper trailer. Gordon struck the engine that was resting on the center line with the front driver’s side of his rig, causing the front steering tires to be damaged. Gordon’s vehicle veered right and slammed into the guardrail on the right side (east side) of the roadway. Gordon controlled his semi safely, and it came to rest on the shoulder of Hwy 151 on the right side of the roadway. Gordon was not injured in the crash. His tractor sustained disabling front-end damages and was removed from the scene by Guy’s Towing and Service. The trailer was not damaged and was also removed from the scene by Guy’s. Due to the crash, Hwy 151 was closed for approximately 9 hours (4:00 am – 1:00 pm) while crews worked to clean up the wreckage. There was a further delay, as a bridge inspector was required to respond to the scene from LaCrosse to assess the damages. The roadway could not be opened until the bridge passed inspection. The bridge passed inspection and was eventually opened; however, the left shoulder in the area of the bridge will remain closed due to the damages it sustained. The shoulder will remain closed until repairs can be made to the bridge’s barrier systems. McAdam Rd remained closed into the afternoon hours as crews continued to work on cleaning up and removing the trailer and its scattered contents. Both Beckman’s truck and trailer were broken into several pieces during the crash and sustained devastating damages. They were both a total loss. Beckman sustained severe but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to Mercy One Hospital in Dubuque. Though the crash is still under investigation it is believed the crash occurred due to driver error. No apparent mechanical or environmental factors played a part in the cause of the crash. Citations are pending further investigation. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in this incident by the Dickeyville Fire Department, Potosi Fire Department, Jamestown Fire Department, Dickeyville EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, LaCrosse RIMC, Wisconsin DOT, USDA Inspectors, The Grant County Highway Department, and Guy’s Towing and Service of Kieler.
