Driver in Grant County Hit and Run Crash Charged with OWI

On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at approximately 2:55pm, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a white GMS truck that had struck a mailbox while northbound on Highway 61 near Badgerland Auto in Paris Township. It was reported that the vehicle did not stop after striking the mailbox and continued northbound into the Village of Tennyson. A Deputy in the Village of Tennyson was able to locate the truck involved, with damage, on Tennyson St. As the Deputy initiated a traffic stop the truck turned into a private driveway before coming to a stop.

The Deputy made contact with the driver, 52 year old, Scott Weary of Tennyson, and observed open intoxicants in the truck. Weary denied being involved in a crash or hitting a mailbox until he was made aware of the damage his truck had sustained. After further investigation, Weary was arrested and cited with operating while intoxicated 1st offense, possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle and hit and run to property adjacent to the highway.

**Persons arrested/or referred for charges by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. An arrest only indicates probable cause exists to bring formal charges.** The names of victims and witnesses to a crime have been withheld per Wisconsin Statute ยง950.04
