Grant County Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel, Resulting in Crash

On July 12, 2024 at about 12:52 AM the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a crash on Hwy 80 near Old 80 Rd, Clifton Township, just south of Livingston, WI.

The investigating deputy learned that Jacob Books, age 22, of Montfort, WI was driving a 2017 Kia Forte owned by Trianna Trace, 21, of Linden. She was a passenger in the car. Books eventually admitted to having fell asleep. Due to this, he failed to negotiate the right hand curve there, leaving the road to the west side of the highway, hitting the embankment at Old 80 Rd and the stop/road signs there. The car crossed Old 80 Rd and went airborne for a short distance, hitting the ground, and coming to rest down the embankment along the east side of Old 80 Rd.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts. Books was uninjured while Trace reported possible injury and was transported to a local hospital by EMS for evaluation.

Books was cited for Inattentive Driving.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Montfort EMS, Livingston First Responders, and Haase’s Towing of Montfort.
