Crossing Rivers Health Awards Twelve Scholarships to Area Graduates

Crossing Rivers Health Awards Twelve Scholarships to Area Graduates

Twelve scholarships were recently awarded to area high school graduates from a number of Crossing Rivers Health affiliate organizations, including the Crossing Rivers Health Medical Staff, the Crossing Rivers Health Foundation, and Partners of Crossing Rivers Health.

Medical Staff Scholarships

The Medical Staff of Crossing Rivers Health proudly awards three scholarships to area graduates each year. “We believe in the next generation of medical professionals and are proud to make available the Crossing Rivers Health Medical Staff Scholarship as an investment in the future of healthcare,” said Dr. Kevin Klean, Medical Chief of Staff at Crossing Rivers Health.

The Crossing Rivers Health Medical Staff Scholarship was established in 2019 and is available to graduating high school seniors in the following school districts: Prairie du Chien, MFL Mar-Mac, River Ridge, Seneca, and Wauzeka-Steuben.

Qualified applicants must attend an accredited college or university with the intent to become a healthcare professional, demonstrating excellence in academic achievement, accomplishments, and community service.

The Crossing Rivers Health Medical Staff is a collaborative team of healthcare professionals from Crossing Rivers Health, Mayo Clinic Health System, and Gundersen Health System, who have privileges to provide care to patients at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

Partners of Crossing Rivers Health Scholarships

Partners of Crossing Rivers Health is a volunteer organization committed to supporting their local community hospital. The Partners also provide annual financial assistance to area high school graduates interested in attending a post-high school program in healthcare. “Partners have awarded four scholarships to area graduates choosing a career in the healthcare field,” announced Ruth Skelly, President of Partners of Crossing Rivers Health.

Crossing Rivers Health Foundation Scholarships

Social Work and Behavioral Health Scholarship

Individuals pursuing degrees in areas such as social work, psychology, sociology, human services or criminal justice are encouraged to apply for the Crossing Rivers Health Foundation Social Work and Behavioral Health Professional Scholarship.

Medical Professional Adversity Scholarship, sponsored by Kevin Klean, DO, FAAOS

On behalf of Dr. Kevin Klean, the Crossing Rivers Health Foundation facilitates this scholarship, which provides opportunity to individuals who, despite adversity, are dedicated to pursuing a career in a healthcare field. Whether that adversity involves family circumstances, financial, or a number of other challenges, we are proud to make this investment in the future of healthcare.

Dr. Klean is currently the orthopedic surgeon at Crossing Rivers Health.  During his early high school years, his father, unfortunately, suffered a major, debilitating stroke.  This was a very difficult experience for him and his family.  He had to take on significantly more responsibility at home while working through his own hardships.  Despite this, he was determined to excel at school and pursue a career in medicine.  He had to pay his own way through college, medical school, and beyond.  Having worked through this experience himself, he is hoping to help a deserving student through a similar situation.

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating high school senior from any one of the following school districts:  Prairie du Chien, MFL Mar-Mac, River Ridge, Seneca, Wauzeka-Steuben, & North Crawford.

In this inaugural year for the scholarships, a number of strong, resilient, and worthy candidates submitted scholarships. As a testament to Dr. Klean’s generosity and the amazing resilience demonstrated by the chosen applicants, Dr. Klean decided to fund two $1,000 scholarships this year – though I know he wishes he could have funded them all.
