Water continues to rise in Prairie Du Chein, causing Island Closure

PRESS RELEASE – RIVER CONTINUES TO RISE

DATE OF RELEASE: IMMEDIATE

The latest projections from the National Weather Service have the river reaching a level at or near 20.2 by Monday, July 1, 2024.

  1. FERIOLE ISLANDAt the current rise we are now planning the Island will be shut down at 12:00 A.M. Saturday, June 29, to general public motor vehicles. Passes will be available for business owners to allow for them to check on their business and/or city parks. The Island will remain closed until further notice.

SANDBAG OPERATIONS – We currently have bags that have been filled and delivered to the location at the corner of East Washington St. and North Ohio St. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections will continue to fill additional bags starting today. The city will assist the elderly and handicapped with placing sandbags if needed; please call the EOC at 608-326-0266.

FLOOD GATE – The flood gate on Wells Street in Prairie du Chien has been closed due to rising projections.

RIVER TRAFFIC – Traffic on the Mississippi River in Crawford County will be restricted, by order of Sheriff Dale McCullick and Mayor Dave Hemmer, once the river passes 19.5 feet. All of the slow no wake buoys that we could find were brought to shore. If you are out on the river when the water recedes and you locate a buoy, please contact City Hall at 608-326-6406. The slow no wake is still in effect.

EVENTS – The Farmers Market and Music in the Park this Thursday is being moved to Lochner park. The Villa Louis Historic Site will be closed this week and will re-evaluate on Sunday for the next week. The Legion Alumni fundraiser is postponed, the Junior Legion games will be played at the Prairie du Chien High School. All other events have been cancelled or postponed on St. Feriole Island.

STREET CLOSURES CURRENTLY IN EFFECT

  • North Main Street is closed from Washington Street to Frederick Street
  • The Washington Street Bridge
  • All roads on St. Feriole Island are closed except Blackhawk Avenue to Water Street to Roulette to 2nd Street back to Blackhawk Avenue.

All street closures are subject to change depending on water levels and/or additional rain.
