On August 4, 2023, 41-year-old Joshua S. Johnson of rural Darlington, was sentenced in Grant County Court after a jury trial of two separate cases stemming from incidents that occurred while he was incarcerated in the Grant County Jail.
For the first incident, Johnson was found guilty of two counts of Battery by Prisoner, one count of Attempted Battery by Prisoner, one count of Criminal Damage to Property and one count of Threats to a Law Enforcement Officer. All of these charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on 6/22/21 at the Grant County Jail. During this incident, Johnson struck two correctional officers. One of the victims had to be transported to the hospital and sustained injuries to her head and face and the other battery victim suffered minor injuries. As a result of these charges, Grant County Judge Craig Day sentenced Johnson to 5 years of initial confinement in the Wisconsin Prison System.
For the second phase of the jury trial, Johnson was found guilty of one count of Disorderly Conduct and one count of Lewd and Lascivious Behavior. These charges stemmed from incidents which date back to January of 2023, where Johnson exposed himself to Correctional Officers. As a result of these charges Judge Day sentenced Johnson to an additional year of confinement in the Wisconsin Prison System.
