On July 21, 2023 at 11:35 AM, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received calls about a two vehicle crash at Hwy 81 at Jentz Baker Rd (east). The initial reports stated that there were multiple people injured in the crash. The investigating deputy learned that Kristina Steiner, 47, of Platteville, WI, was driving her 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix going west on Hwy 81, approaching that intersection. Two minors, both her children (16 and 13) were with her. The 13-year-old was in the front passenger seat and the 16-year-old was in the back, passenger side seat. At the same time, Du Wayne Lynch, 62, of Platteville, was driving his 2004 Saturn Ion on Jentz Baker Rd at the stop sign at Hwy 81. Darren Hogan, 57, of rural Platteville, was in the front passenger seat of his car. A witness to the crash was driving directly behind the Steiner vehicle. The witness to the crash told the investigating deputy that, as Steiner’s vehicle was approaching the intersection, Lynch’s vehicle pulled out in from the stop sign, in front of Steiner. Steiner reportedly swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting Lynch’s vehicle but was not able to do so as Lynch continued to pull out into the intersection. Steiner’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Lynch’s vehicle, with both vehicles coming to rest in the road, blocking both lanes of Hwy 81. Steiner and her 16-year-old child were transported to a local hospital with the child later being transferred to a Madison hospital. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Platteville Fire Department, Southwest Health EMS, Lancaster EMS, UW-Platteville Police Department, SOS Road Rescue of Platteville, and Arrow Towing of Lancaster. The crash remains under investigation at this time
