Crawford County’s “K-9 Breck” Passes Away

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department’s “K-9 Breck” has passed away. The Department made the announcement on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon. Breck began suffering from health issues earlier this year.
 
K-9 Breck was born in Hungary in 2013. He came to the United States where Deputy Joseph Breeser was paired with him at Southern Police Canine, Inc. in North Carolina in 2014. Breck began patrolling in Crawford County in the fall of 2014 as the first K-9 for the Sheriff’s Office. Breck’s alerts directly led to the seizure of 6.15 pounds of methamphetamine, 4 pounds of marijuana, over 2 ounces of psilocybin mushrooms, crack cocaine, cocaine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, several grams of fentanyl, numerous schedule 2 narcotics, numerous precursors used to manufacture methamphetamine and over 25 thousand dollars in cash. His efforts also led to several federal indictments.

It is with a heavy heart that the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of K-9 Breck. Breck began suffering from health issues in 2022 and despite his battle, succumbed to his illness. Although his time came too soon, Breck leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for decades.
K-9 Breck was born in Hungary on April 20, 2013. He came to the United States where Deputy Joseph Breeser was paired with him at Southern Police Canine, Inc. in North Carolina in 2014. Breck began patrolling in Crawford County in the fall of 2014 as the first K-9 for the Sheriff’s Office. Breck proved himself quickly as a tremendous assist to the community and would become one of the top working canines in Southwest Wisconsin.
Breck was recertified through Southern Police Canine, Inc. yearly and certified through Midwest Canine Detection and Consulting in 2021.
K-9 Breck and Handler Joe Breeser were members of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handler Association (WLECHA), and they received a prestigious award for Meritorious Narcotics Find presented by WLECHA in 2022.

Breck’s alerts directly led to the seizure of 6.15 pounds of methamphetamine, 4 pounds of marijuana, over 2 ounces of psilocybin mushrooms, crack cocaine, cocaine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, several grams of fentanyl, numerous schedule II narcotics, numerous precursors used to manufacture methamphetamine, and over $25,110.00 in cash.
Additionally, K-9 Breck’s alerts led to the following Federal Indictments:
● (1) Subject indicted in Northern District of Iowa and sentenced to 5 years in federal prison stemming from a vehicle sniff by K-9 Breck in 2016 where over 14 grams of methamphetamine was seized.
● (2) Minnesota subjects indicted in Western District of Wisconsin stemming from K-9 Breck sniff in 2019 where 3.9 ounces of methamphetamine was seized. One subject was sentenced to 5 years and the other to 7 years in federal prison.
● (1) Subject sentenced in federal court in 2020, to 6.5 years, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine from a sniff in 2019 where 5.7 ounces of methamphetamine and 2.7 ounces of psilocybin mushrooms were seized.
● (2) Subjects were indicted in the Western District of Wisconsin in 2021 and are awaiting federal sentencing for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine stemming from an April 2021 sniff. The case involved the seizure of 3.05 pounds of methamphetamine and $17,200.00 in cash after receiving positive alerts from K-9 Breck.
● (1) Subject indicted in the Western District of Wisconsin in 2022 for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine stemming from several traffic stops from the K-9 Unit where over 6.7 ounces of methamphetamine was seized. The subject is awaiting sentencing.
● (1) Subject indicted in the State of Minnesota for distributing methamphetamine with ties to Mexican Drug Cartels. Prior to the indictment, the K-9 unit pursued the subject for several miles before apprehending and K-9 Breck alerted to the vehicle, leading to the seizure of 12 ounces of methamphetamine and $1,460.00 in cash.
Breck tracked over 20 suspects, including fleeing felons and persons having mental health crises. Over the years Breck assisted over 20 other agencies. Breck’s favorite part of the job was getting to visit with the numerous kids over the years at the various demonstrations with organizations and schools.
